What is a typical day as a kitchen designer?
As the owner of Enigma Interiors, my days are filled with many varied duties. My time is mostly spent designing kitchens with clients, on a one-on-one basis, taking care of projects under construction, selecting colours, looking after advertising and promotion of our business, sourcing new ideas and studying latest trends. My days are very busy!

What is your background?
I originally completed a cabinet-making apprenticeship, and have gone on to have 19 years' experience in the kitchen industry. My wife Rebecca and I started Enigma Interiors more than 10 years ago. The company has continued to evolve over the years, and there are now two arms to it; a design service which operates both nationally and internationally, and a construction division which we try and limit to south-east Queensland, however we have taken on several projects overseas.

What are the hallmarks of your style?
Well, in some ways my approach is a bit unconventional and like to think beyond what is standard with designs that create interest, flexibility and space - but where functionality isn't sacrificed and neither is visual interest. Longevity is important to us, so all hardware and materials are the best quality available, and we combine this with excellent workmanship, which is something Enigma is well known for. All our employees and tradespeople have been trained to our high standards.

Do you have a design philosophy?
Each kitchen I design must work well, so maybe I analyse all the possible options, helping my clients understand what would suit them the best and why. We approach each project with the philosophy of fusing client expectations with Enigma creativity, within an affordable budget. I brainstorm each design according to the client's requirements with a view to creating something special and unique. I focus on listening to each customer and structuring a design to match both their lifestyle and budget.

What achievements are you most proud of?
Most of my satisfaction comes from seeing my client's requests and desires come to life on each project. We are also proud to have won more than 25 awards, including 'Queensland Kitchen Designer of the Year' four times, which makes Enigma Interiors Queensland's most awarded kitchen company.

What sort of involvement do you have in the industry?
I've been an active member of the HIA since 1998 and have presented the HIA's Kitchen Design and Planning workshops for almost two years. I enjoy being a member of the HIA Regional Executive Committee, which looks at the policy and legislative aspects of the building industry. I wholeheartedly support and encourage higher standards in quality and innovative design being strived for within my trade, and in fact the entire building industry.

Do you have any other interests!
One of my great passions is photography, particularly wedding photography. My time is also spent studying the bible, cycling, travelling and enjoying fine wine and food with my friends. Family is really important to me, and I'm looking forward to meeting our first child when she is born soon.
